Trauma Release

The Training

This module presents an integrative approach to incorporating breath, movement, and touch in Myofascial Energetic Release, with a focus on trauma healing and management. You will gain an understanding in what trauma is and how it manifests in the body while learning how to work trauma-informed in your practice. Trauma can be seen as a dysregulated state of the nervous system and can come as a result of single incidents of fear and terror as well as growing up in a mis-attuned environment. Emotions which could not be expressed at the time or movements and unfinished defensive responses which were halted can get stored as myofascial tension and chronic hyperarousal or shutdown response of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The result can be physical, such as a tight diaphragm and shallow breathing, tense hip flexor muscles, low back pain, a stiff neck or a locked jaw, among other symptoms. Panic attacks, sleeping difficulty, fatigue, burnout and being overwhelmed by anger are also related to trauma and a dysregulated ANS. Myofascial tension and holding patterns in the body can be called “frozen history”. Fascia is directly related to the ANS and deep work on holding patterns can “unfreeze” old feelings and memories. In this module we will focus on how you can guide your client to connect with unconscious material and integrate it in a safe and healing manner.

You will learn

Learn about Wilhelm Reich’s 7 segments of tension in the body
Learn about Character Styles; understanding how these defense mechanisms and muscle contractions form in early life and become part of your identity, how they affect adult behavior and how they present both limitations and possibilities for the client
Understand why you are also working on the ANS when you work on myofascia
Learn how to recognize emotional release in the client and how to respond in a way that promotes healing and integration
Work with unwinding as a way to finish incomplete survival responses
Learn to track changes in the body that indicate changes in the ANS
Practice using words to guide your client
Learn methods to help clients dismantle the ‘ body armor’ of tension and collapse that functions as a defense mechanisms—that protects but also blocks emotional integration
Understand the role of the Vagus Nerve in trauma response and techniques to restore the flow of a disrupted 'Fight/Flight/Freeze' reaction
Practice regulating your own ANS to create safety and trust for the client
Employ trauma release techniques and movement meditations to empower your client towards more embodied emotional awareness and healing
Engage in practice sessions that reinforce the learning and application of techniques, ensuring participants can confidently apply these methods in their professional practice
