Working With The Nervous System, Fascia & Emotional Integration
Trauma is not only a psychological experience – here the body keeps the score. It can be understood as a state where the nervous system has lost its natural capacity to regulate and the client is stuck in fight, flight, freeze or collapse. This may result from single overwhelming events of fear or terror or from growing up in an environment miss-attuned to your needs.
Emotions which could not be expressed at the time or movements and unfinished defensive responses which were halted can get stored as myofascial tension and chronic hyperarousal or shutdown response of the autonomic nervous system (ANS).
In the body, this can appear as:
- chronic tension and “body armoring”
- restricted breathing and a tight diaphragm
- patterns of hyperarousal (fight/flight) or shutdown (freeze)
- pain symptoms, such as back pain, stiff neck or TMJ
- fatigue, anxiety, panic attacks, sleeping difficulties or emotional overwhelm
This 6-day Myofascial Energetic Release training module presents an integrative approach to working with breath, movement and touch with a focus on trauma healing and management. You will gain an understanding in what trauma is and how it manifests in the body while learning how to work trauma-informed in your practice.
Trauma in the Body: Structure, Fascia and Nervous System
Myofascial tension and holding patterns in the body can be called “frozen history”. Fascia is directly related to the ANS and deep work on holding patterns can “unfreeze” old feelings and memories. In this module we will focus on how you can guide your client to connect with unconscious material and integrate it in a safe and healing manner.
Awareness, Breath and Movement
By using words and touch to support your client to get in touch with with feelings stored in the body, a more spontaneous and deeper breath will indicate a deeper state of relaxation and connection with unconscious material.
Working Relationally and Professionally
Trauma-informed bodywork requires not only technical skill, but also presence, clarity and the ability to create safety. When the client is supported to feel and heal, the client regains the ability to regulate according to the situation instead of being stuck in fight, flight, freeze or collapse. Next to healing physical pain symptoms, the result is increased emotional resilience, a deeper sense of safety and a greater ability to connect with others and maintain healthy relationships.
